The landscape of security technology is evolving rapidly, driven by advances in artificial intelligence, automation, and sustainability. While traditional methods such as physical security guards remain important, the future of security lies in leveraging cutting-edge technologies to enhance safety, improve efficiency, and scale operations.
We sat down with Lemuel Blanco, President and Chief Technology Officer at ECAMSECURE, to discuss how emerging security technologies are transforming the industry. Here are the top security technology trends to watch in 2025:
1. AI-Powered Behavioral Analysis
Artificial intelligence (AI) is transforming video surveillance by addressing two persistent challenges: staffing limitations and operator fatigue.
“So, the trend now in the industry is, how do we take the feed out of those cameras, and how do we identify bad behavior?” said Blanco. “I don't care if there's a person in front of the view of the camera, but I need to know when that person is about to do something bad.”
AI solutions can detect suspicious activity in real-time and alert operators, reducing the reliance on manual monitoring. By filtering out nuisance alarms, AI increases efficiency and enables organizations to scale their security operations effectively.
2. Mobile Surveillance Units (MSUs)
Portable and highly versatile, Mobile Surveillance Units (MSUs) are becoming a staple in modern security strategies. Equipped with cameras, strobe lights, and audio capabilities, these units act as visible deterrents and provide cost-effective alternatives to on-site security personnel, with studies showing that the presence of an MSU can reduce crime by up to 92%.
“Think of police vehicles parked at intersections without an officer inside,” Blanco explained. “Just the presence of a mobile unit with flashing lights acts as a deterrent.”
MSUs are particularly effective for securing parking lots, large facilities, and remote areas where deploying physical guards might be cost-prohibitive. “We’re able to do perimeter security quickly and easily with mobile surveillance units,” says Blanco. “The industry is looking at mobile surveillance units as almost equal to having a guard that is standing post in that area.”
3. Advanced Access Control Systems
Access control systems are evolving to include dual authentication methods that combine traditional credentials with biometrics. Technologies like facial recognition are being integrated with badge systems to enhance security.
"Key cards alone are an ineffective security measure—if stolen or found, unauthorized individuals can easily gain access,” notes Blanco. “By integrating two-factor authentication with facial recognition or other authentication methods, you help ensure only verified personnel can enter, enhancing security and reducing risks."
However, Blanco also points out that when utilizing biometric authentication, organizations must navigate privacy regulations such as the Illinois Biometric Information Privacy Act (BIPA) to ensure compliance.
4. License Plate Recognition (LPR) and Centralized Databases
License plate recognition (LPR) technology is gaining traction as a key tool for monitoring and controlling vehicle access. LPR systems are increasingly used by cities to track vehicles at intersections and by businesses to distinguish between authorized and unauthorized vehicles. The technology also integrates with centralized databases, enabling real-time information sharing between organizations and law enforcement.
“License plate recognition is now integrated with national databases,” Blanco noted. “If a stolen or blacklisted vehicle enters a monitored area, an alert is generated, allowing authorities to act proactively.”
This integration enhances security by providing faster responses to suspicious activity. Businesses can leverage LPR technology to improve perimeter security, manage parking facilities, and enhance overall operational efficiency.
5. Virtual Gate Guards and Remote Monitoring
With rising labor costs and worker shortages, remote monitoring solutions like virtual gate guards are gaining traction. These systems allow businesses to manage access control remotely while maintaining a human touch through virtual interaction.
“This is all about efficiency,” said Blanco. “Being able to manage multiple locations remotely while still providing customer service and a human touch.”
6. Sustainable Security Solutions
The shift toward sustainable security technologies is reshaping the industry. Mobile surveillance systems are transitioning from diesel-powered generators to greener alternatives like solar and methanol-powered units.
“Some states are banning diesel generators,” said Blanco. “Security companies are transitioning to solar or methanol-powered units with zero carbon footprint.”
7. Drone Surveillance for Perimeter Monitoring
Drones are becoming essential for monitoring expansive areas such as oil fields and pipelines. Advances in autonomous flight technology and self-contained surveillance systems with thermal cameras and sensors are making drones a cost-effective solution for perimeter protection.
“Perimeter protection is evolving, with self-contained systems using thermal cameras and intelligent sensors,” Blanco explained. These tools enhance boundary protection by detecting intrusions in real-time, even in areas lacking power or internet connectivity.
“This perimeter fence line is very costly,” he said. “A self-contained product can be placed within the perimeter without having to provide the infrastructure, and it can be quickly deployed a lot of times.”
The Future of Security Technology
As we move into 2025, the integration of advanced security technologies will continue to redefine how organizations protect their assets. From AI-powered analytics to sustainable mobile surveillance systems, these innovations offer scalable, efficient, and cost-effective solutions.
